Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Importing a used Jeep Grand Wagoneer from the USA

The Grand Wagoneer is Jeep's return to the top of the full-size class, and for buyers in Germany it is one of the few genuinely three-row American luxury SUVs that has no direct factory equivalent on the European market. If you want to import a used Jeep Grand Wagoneer from the USA, you are looking at a body-on-frame flagship built in Warren, Michigan, sized and equipped for the American road. As an independent broker for used US vehicles, we source these cars from private sellers, auctions and dealer stock stateside, verify the paperwork and organise the whole route to your German registration. Because the Grand Wagoneer is assembled in the United States, a clean VIN with a US plant code often opens the door to the 0% EU import duty introduced on 1 July 2026 — but that always has to be proven on the individual car, never assumed.

From launch to today

The name reaches back to the original SJ Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer of 1963 to 1991, the wood-panelled body-on-frame wagon that effectively invented the luxury 4x4. Jeep revived it in 2021 for the 2022 model year as an all-new platform (internal code WS), splitting the line into the Wagoneer and the more expensive Grand Wagoneer. A long-wheelbase Grand Wagoneer L followed for 2023, adding roughly 30 cm of length and a much larger cargo bay behind the third row. Year-to-year changes have been mostly under the skin — the shift from the 6.4-litre V8 to the twin-turbo inline-six being the biggest.

Engines and drivetrain in detail

Early Grand Wagoneers (2022) used the 6.4-litre naturally aspirated Hemi V8, around 471 hp, paired with the 8HP75 eight-speed automatic. From 2023 Jeep moved the Grand Wagoneer to the Hurricane 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six in its high-output tune, badged 510, producing about 510 hp and 500 lb-ft. All versions run full-time four-wheel drive; the Series II and III typically add the Quadra-Drive II two-speed transfer case with an electronic limited-slip rear differential and Quadra-Lift air suspension. This is a heavy vehicle — well over 2.9 tonnes — so expect real-world consumption to reflect that regardless of engine.

Trim levels and variants

The Grand Wagoneer is offered in a single seven- or eight-seat wagon body, standard or long (L) wheelbase. Trim walk runs Series I, Series II, Series III and the top Obsidian appearance package, with option groups adding the 23-speaker McIntosh audio, front-passenger touchscreen, rear-seat entertainment and semi-aniline leather. Captain's chairs in the second row are common on higher trims, dropping seating to six.

Used availability in the USA

Because the current car is recent, the American used pool is dominated by 2022 to 2024 examples, most with low to moderate mileage and a strong share of well-kept, one-owner cars coming off lease. V8 2022 models are comparatively scarce and sought after by enthusiasts; the six-cylinder cars are far more numerous. Southern and Sun Belt cars tend to be rust-free, which matters for a body-on-frame vehicle you intend to run through the German TUEV.

When importing makes sense

This is the import for a family or business that wants a large, quiet, three-row luxury hauler with real towing ability and a presence no German-market SUV quite matches. If you tow a horse or boat trailer, cover long autobahn distances in comfort, or simply want something distinct from the usual German premium SUVs, the Grand Wagoneer makes sense — provided you accept its width, thirst and the fact that servicing is specialist work in Europe.

Reliability and common problems

The WS Grand Wagoneer is young, so long-term data is still forming, but a few themes recur in US owner reports. Infotainment and the multi-screen Uconnect 5 setup can throw glitches — reboots, laggy screens, occasional module replacements — and are the most common warranty visits. Early cars saw a handful of software recalls affecting the instrument display and driver-assist systems, so confirm the recall history on the VIN. The air suspension is comfortable but is a wear item to budget for later in life. The 6.4 Hemi is a known quantity mechanically but drinks fuel; watch for the occasional lifter/tick complaint typical of the family. On the Hurricane six, keep on top of oil changes given the turbochargers. Because these are heavy vehicles, brakes and tyres wear faster than owners expect.

How US versions differ

US cars come with amber-only or combined rear indicators, a different headlight beam pattern, mph-primary clusters and no rear fog lamp — all TUEV-relevant. Radio and telematics are tuned for North American bands. Equipment levels are often higher than a comparable European luxury SUV, but the trade-off is width that makes German parking and narrow streets a genuine consideration. There is no official Jeep dealer support for the Wagoneer line in Germany, so plan servicing with a specialist for US vehicles.

From US purchase to registration

The route is consistent: you select a specific car, we run the VIN and origin check (plant code, Carfax/AutoCheck history, title status), funds move through secure escrow, the vehicle is transported to a US port and shipped by ocean freight (RoRo or container) to Bremerhaven or Rotterdam. At arrival we handle customs clearance, then the car goes through TUEV and individual approval (Einzelabnahme) before you register it with your local authority.

Costs, duty and taxes at a glance

Remember: no origin proof, no 0% duty – and 19% German import VAT is due on every import.

Two separate charges apply. First, EU import duty: under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461, in force since 1 July 2026 for directly transported goods until 31 December 2029, vehicles of provable US origin can qualify for 0% — but this depends on the VIN and plant, so it is checked per car, never guaranteed. Second, the 19% German import Einfuhrumsatzsteuer always applies on the customs value and is charged separately. On top come shipping, port and clearance fees and our transparent brokerage service fee. We never add a hidden margin to the car.

TÜV, approval and license plates

Typical work includes converting or coding the rear lighting for European indicator behaviour, retrofitting a rear fog lamp, adjusting headlight aim (or fitting compliant units), and having the odometer read and documented in km. The TUEV inspector checks emissions paperwork, brakes, and identity against the documents before issuing the approval that lets you register.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Match the VIN to the plant code and confirm US build for the duty question.
  • Pull a full Carfax or AutoCheck history — accidents, title brand, service.
  • Confirm the title is clean, not salvage/rebuilt, unless priced accordingly.
  • Inspect frame and underbody for rust; prefer Sun Belt cars.
  • Check all open recalls have been closed on the VIN.
  • Test the air suspension through all ride heights and the infotainment fully.
  • Verify service records, especially oil changes on the turbo six.

Import FAQ

Is the Jeep Grand Wagoneer built in the USA?

Yes, the current WS Grand Wagoneer is assembled in Warren, Michigan. A US plant code on the VIN often supports the 0% EU duty, but we still verify it on each individual car.

Does the 0% import duty apply automatically?

No. It applies only with provable US origin under the 2026 regulations and direct transport. We check the VIN and origin before making any statement about duty.

Do I always pay import VAT?

Yes. The 19% German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer always applies on import and is charged separately from any duty.

V8 or the twin-turbo six — which should I import?

The 2022 6.4 V8 is rarer and sounds the part but drinks fuel; the 2023+ Hurricane six is more efficient and just as quick. Choose on availability and how the car checks out mechanically.

Can it pass the German TUEV?

Yes, with the usual lighting adjustments, a rear fog lamp and headlight compliance. We prepare the car for the Einzelabnahme.

How is it shipped?

By ocean freight, either RoRo or in a container, from a US port to Bremerhaven or Rotterdam, followed by customs clearance.

Is servicing a problem in Germany?

There is no official Wagoneer dealer network here, so plan on a US-vehicle specialist for maintenance and parts.

How long does the whole import take?

Typically several weeks from purchase to registration, driven mainly by shipping schedules and the TUEV appointment.
